AWS has announced its plans to launch hundreds of Local Zones to expand its Edge cloud network extensively. Local Zones serve as Edge locations hosting applications that need low latency to final users or on-premises installations. Some of the services the zone offers include database, storage, and compute close to population centers for applications that are latency-sensitive. Amazon currently has 17 Local Zones in the country. It had also announced plans to launch 32 more outside the US. It hasn’t launched the international locations yet.

According to AWS’s global senior consultant & industry specialist for telecom professional services, Hisham Elshaer, the company is looking to expand its Edge infrastructure past the confirmed 49. According to him, the regions are still in the tens but will soon be in the hundreds.
