CyrusOne has received approval to build a data center in Sangamon, Illinois. Members of the Sangamon County Board voted on Tuesday to allow construction of the $500 million project, which will span 280 acres and include four buildings at the 13000 block of Thayer Road in Waverly.
CyrusOne has said the campus will require up to 634MW of power at full buildout, utilize closed-loop cooling technology, and generate approximately $100 million in property tax revenue over a 20-year period. The approval marks a win for the developer, which submitted its planning application last October. However, the proposal faced significant local opposition, with residents raising concerns about environmental impacts, proximity to residential areas, and the planning process itself.
CyrusOne officials were also questioned over allegations that local unions were encouraged to register early for the meeting’s public comment session, potentially displacing opponents in the speaking order, according to Illinois Times.
The report cites a leaked email attributed to David Wells, Business Manager and Financial Secretary of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which stated that “the CyrusOne folks have asked us to sign up early for this to try and take the opposition’s spots in the order. That being said, hopefully none of us will have to speak.”
