Some Italian companies have discussed building a data center company in a Dolomite mine. The University of Trento, construction company Covi Costruziono, IT services company Dedagroup, sustainable healthcare provider GPI, and holding company Istituto Atesino di Sviluppo (ISA), are looking to develop a new campus in the San Romedio mine in Trento, Italy.

The Trentino Data Mine project, expected to cost about €50.2 million, will be funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, public funds, and some private investments. The University of Trento will lead this project, along with a partnership selected through public tender. The organizations will build, design, and operate the 80,000 square meters of the data center campus.

This campus, designed for fields like life sciences, AI, high-performance and edge computing, and cybersecurity, will work on various projects contributing to the energy transition. The campus will run on renewable energy while the mile will shield it against potential natural disasters.
